You know how it goes – we all play favourites when it comes to jewellery, but the pieces you love the most get worn to death the fastest. And then, tragedy! Nothing else will suit the neckline or the pattern or the tone of your go-to ensemble quite as well as your faithful few favourites.
But never fear! There are a few tricks of the trade that can help keep your silver sparkling, your brass beautiful and all your jewellery glamorous.
1. IT’S THE FINISHING TOUCH, NOT YOUR FOUNDATION
I am so guilty of sleeping, showering and everything else in my favourite earrings (and necklace and rings and anklets and… anyway), but jewellery loves it best when it’s loved the least (time-wise that is). So put it on last – after your clothes, make up and perfume – and take it off first – before getting undressed, hitting the shower and going to bed.
2. UNLESS YOU ARE BEYONCE, JEWELLERY DOES NOT BELONG POOLSIDE
Aside from the fact that you run the risk of looking a booty girl from a rap music video, chlorine and other chemicals are terrible for jewellery – silver will tarnish and gold can pit. For similar reasons, Sadie the cleaning lady never wore her jewellery while cleaning the shower either.
3. SIMPLE IS BEST WHEN IT COMES TO CLEANING
While we’re talking about Sadie, don’t get carried away with cleaning your jewellery either. Cleaning solutions can do way more damage than good – stick with warm water and a jewellery cloth.
4.KEEP AN EYE ON THE SITUATION
It might not be rocket science, but one of the best ways to care for your jewellery is to have a good look over it before you put it on. Check out the clasps and any stones or links for signs of wear and tear and you won’t be taken by surprise by a disappearing necklace.
5. STORE IT SAFELY – AT HOME AND AWAY
At the risk of stating the obvious, leaving your jewellery in a tangled mess on your dressing table generally doesn’t lead to longevity. Keep it somewhere safe where each piece can be stored separately – it will protect it from damage and make finding what you’re looking for easier. The same goes for when you are travelling – a jumble of jewellery in your toiletries bag to rifle through each day does not a happy traveller make!
